Disability Awareness Day Explained: The UK’s Largest Disability Event

What Is Disability Awareness Day? 

Every July, something remarkable happens in Warrington. Thousands of people gather at Walton Hall and Gardens for an event that has become a cornerstone of the UK's disability community.

It‘s called Disability Awareness Day – or DAD for short.

It is the world's largest not-for-profit, volunteer-led disability exhibition. But it's far more than just an exhibition – it's a pan-disability event that promotes a "can do" culture: focusing on what disabled people can do, not what they can‘t.

From a "One-Off" Event to a Global Phenomenon

In 1992, Dave Thompson and two friends organised a "one-off" event. Thompson, a former American football player, sustained a spinal cord injury during a match in 1989 and has been a wheelchair user ever since. After his injury, he founded the Warrington Disability Partnership (WDP).

He had attended many disability exhibitions, but felt that they often left disabled people feeling segregated. He wanted to create a "level playing field where everybody was treated equally". The first DAD was born in July 1992.

That "one-off" event has now grown into the largest event of its kind in the world, running for over three decades. It has also gone global, inspiring spin-off events in Cameroon, Gibraltar, Denmark, Sweden, India, Egypt, Mexico, Thailand, Uganda, and the United States. By 2024, an estimated 600,000 people had attended DAD-related events.

Thompson once said that DAD embodies the ethos of WDP – "it's what we can do, not what we can't do, that matters".

In recognition of his services to disabled people, Thompson was awarded an MBE in 2001 and became an Honorary Freeman of Warrington in 2024. In 2006, the DAD team also received the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
